“Crucible Part One”
PAGE ONE (Six Panel Grid) PANEL 1
Medium shot of COLLEEN WING, a beautiful, fit redhead in her late thirties, standing in her upscale living room. A cordless phone is firmly held against her head. The walls behind her are composed entirely of glass, revealing the night sky.
CAPTION: MALIBU, CA ~ 7:01 PM PST
PANEL 2
Establishing shot of a Brooklyn tenement that has seen better days. The light from a television screen illuminates the top right window as the first few snowflakes of a winter storm falls from the evening sky.
CAPTION: NEW YORK, NY ~
10:01 PM EST
PANEL 3
Pull back from Panel 1 to reveal more of the living room Colleen is occupying. The floor is a glossy marble, immaculately clean. Leather and chrome furniture sparsely adorns the vacuous room. Nothing superfluous is present. This is the home of a modern samurai.
SFX: (Filtered) BRRING!
PANEL 4
Push into Panel 2 to reveal the interior of the illuminated apartment. A solitary figure buried beneath a mountain of blankets sits in front of the television screen. Warm breath from the heap of blankets crystallizes in the frigid air.
SFX: BRRING!
PANEL 5
Pull back from Panel 3 to reveal a gorgeous Modern style home; a single-floor ranch with outer walls of glass. It rests on a hilltop overlooking the ocean. A narrow winding road leads up the hill towards the house.
SFX: (Filtered) BRRING!
PANEL 6
Close-up of MISTY KNIGHT’s emaciated face peeking out from beneath the blankets. More frosted breath escapes from her mouth.
ANSWERING MACHINE: (No Tail) HELLO. YOU’VE REACHED MISTY KNIGHT INVESTIGATIONS. NO ONE IS HERE RIGHT NOW…
PAGE TWO (Five Panels)
PANEL 1
Close on an aggravated Colleen. The cordless phone remains pressed against her ear.
ANSWERING MACHINE: (Filtered/No Tail) …RETURN YOUR CALL AT OUR EARLIEST CONVENIENCE. ~beep~
COLLEEN: YES, THIS IS COLLEEN WING, YOUR EX-PARTNER. AND IF YOU DON’T GET OFF THAT COUCH RIGHT NOW, SOON TO BE YOUR EX-FRIEND.
PANEL 2
Full view of Misty’s cluttered living room lit primarily by the television screen. Dirty clothes, empty glasses, and discarded food & alcohol containers litter the floor and furniture. MISTY, a frail African-American woman with short blondish dreadlocks is making her way off the couch, discarding most of the blankets with her remaining arm. She is wearing an oversized set of flannel pajamas with her right sleeve dangling empty. (As we’ll learn, Misty has been diagnosed with cancer and has just completed her second round of chemotherapy. Although the same age as Colleen, Misty appears to be in her late forties and extremely emaciated.)
COLLEEN: (Filtered/No Tail) I KNOW YOU’RE HOME. OUR SPECIAL JUST ENDED THERE AND I NEED THE FULL REPORT.
PANEL 3
Back to a less aggravated, more expressive Colleen.
COLLEEN: WANT TO KNOW HOW I LOOK--
MISTY: (Filtered/No Tail) YOU REALLY ARE ONE VAIN SAMURAI, RED.
PANEL 4
Close on Misty, telephone receiver in hand. The telephone cord wraps around Misty’s right side, accentuating her lack of an appendage.
COLLEEN1: (Filtered/No Tail) BEEN OUT IN LOS ANGELES TOO LONG. IT’S MADE ME BODY-CONSCIOUS.
COLLEEN2: (Filtered/No Tail) NOW TELL ME, HOW WAS THE SHOW?
MISTY: INTERESTING. I NEVER KNEW MOON KNIGHT WAS WHITE.
PANEL 5
Split screen showing both ladies talking on the phone, Colleen is situated on the left.
COLLEEN: FORGET MOON KNIGHT. GIVE ME THE LOWDOWN ON OUR SEGMENT.
MISTY1: WELL, BESIDES CALLING US THE “DAUGHTERS OF THE DRAGON” TOO MANY TIMES, EVERYTHING WAS SPOT ON.
MISTY 2: YOU DO HAVE A SATELLITE DISH. COULD HAVE JUST WATCHED THE EAST COAST FEED.
PAGE THREE (Six Panels)
PANEL 1
Colleen plops herself down on her designer couch, settling in for a lengthy chat with her erstwhile friend.
COLLEEN: ALLISON IS THE ONE WHO KNOWS HOW TO WORK THAT STUFF.
MISTY: (Filtered/No Tail) AND YOU LET MY GODDAUGHTER OUT ON A SCHOOL NIGHT?
PANEL 2
Close on Colleen as she talks into the phone and simultaneously plays with her hair.
COLLEEN1: THE GIRL’S ON WINTER BREAK. SHE CAN SLEEP IN TOMORROW.
COLLEEN2: YOU KNOW, IF YOU HAD DONE AN INTERVIEW TOO, WE PROBABLY WOULDN’T HAVE TO SHARE THE HOUR WITH MOON KNIGHT.
PANEL 3
Same as Panel 2 - expect Colleen stops playing with her hair and turns towards the strange sound she just heard.
SFX: (Small) TWICK
MISTY: (Filtered/No Tail) WHO, AGAIN, IS WHITE. ONE LESS BLACK HERO FOR THE WORLD TO LOOK UP TO.
COLLEEN: ANOTHER REASON YOU SHOULD HAVE DONE THE SHOW.
PANEL 4
Colleen gets up off the couch and makes her way towards the wall of windows. Her face registers a look of inquisitiveness.
MISTY: (Filtered/No Tail) YEAH, I COULD TELL KIDS TO WORK HARD, FIGHT CRIME AND MAYBE THEY TOO CAN DIE SLOWLY OF CANCER.
COLLEEN: MISTY…
PANEL 5
From outside the house, Colleen is intensely looking towards her right side, trying to find the source of that noise.
MISTY: (Filtered/No Tail) LISTEN, I HAVE TO GO. CALL ME TOMORROW AND TELL ME IF YOU THOUGHT YOUR BOOBS WERE PERKY ENOUGH.
PANEL 6
Same as Panel 5 – except Colleen is now directing her search to her left side.
COLLEEN1: MISTY, WAIT..
COLLEEN2: MISTY…
PAGE FOUR (Five Panels)
PANEL 1
From inside the house, an aggravated Colleen presses the end button on her phone. Her attention is still directed to the exterior of her residence.
COLLEEN1: DAMMIT.
COLLEEN2: (Small) STILL SO STUBBORN.
PANEL 2
Satisfied that the perimeter of her home is not in danger, Colleen heads back to her couch. A widescreen flat television screen is slowly descending from its recess in the ceiling.
COLLEEN: TELEVISION – ON.
PANEL 3
Colleen returns her athletic buttocks to the comfortable couch and gently rubs her temples in a forlorn attempt to halt a coming headache. The hi-tech television has made it to its set viewing position.
COLLEEN: DISPLAY CHANNEL 82, CHICAGO ILLINOIS.
TELEVISION: (Filtered) CHANNEL 82, DOCUMENTARY SERIES “MARVELS”. 8:00- 9:00 PM CENTRAL.
PANEL 4
A television show appears (surprisingly enough) on the television screen. BOAZ VALNIC, basically ‘Todd Newton from E!’ with a goatee, occupies the left portion of screen with an array of Marvel Heroes forming the backdrop. A text graphic displays the name ”BOAZ VALNIC” in the lower left portion. Colleen lounges back into the sofa and settles in for the program.
BOAZ1: (Filtered) AND WELCOME TO ANOTHER EXCITING INSTALLMENT OF MARVELS, THE SHOW THAT EXAMINES THE MEN AND WOMEN BENEATH THE MASKS.
BOAZ2: (Filtered) TONIGHT, NOT ONLY DO WE HAVE A BEHIND THE SCENES LOOK AT MOON KNIGHT, BOTH THE MAN AND THE UPCOMING MOVIE…
PANEL 5
Closer in on the television set, Boaz remains the same but the backdrop of Marvel heroes has been replaced with an image of Colleen and Misty in all their 70s glory. Colleen is armed with her trademark swords as Misty (in full afro) points a magnum directly at the “camera.”
BOAZ1: (Filtered) …BUT WE ALSO HAVE AN IN-DEPTH REPORT ON TWO OF THE ORIGINAL HEROINES TO EXPLODE ONTO THE SUPERHERO SCENE…
BOAZ2: (Filtered) …COLLEEN WING AND MISTY KNIGHT, “THE DAUGHTERS OF THE DRAGON.”
PAGE FIVE (Five Panels)
PANEL 1
Close on Colleen’s face, cautiously alarmed.
COLLEEN1: THAT’S THE PICTURE THEY USE?
COLLEEN2: WE LOOK LIKE SOME WANNABE “CHARLIE’S ANGELS.”
PANEL 2
Back on the television. On the screen, Boaz’s head & torso is superimposed over an old photo of a teenage Colleen garbed in traditional hakama and kimono of a samurai. She is practicing with a large katana in a “Matrix-like” training dojo.
COLLEEN: (No Tail) OR A HOT “CAGNEY & LACEY.”
BOAZ: (Filtered) DURING HER YOUTH IN THE FAR EAST, COLLEEN WING WAS TRAINED IN THE WAYS OF THE SAMURAI BY HER GRANDFATHER, A PREVIOUS HEAD OF JAPAN’S SECRET SERVICE.
PANEL 3
The television screen now fills the panel. Displayed on the screen is the front page of the Daily Bugle with a headline reading “HEIST FOILED” accompanied by a photo of a young Misty Knight (with both arms) tackling a young Colleen in the middle of a robbery attempt. The host of the program is not in frame.
BOAZ1: (No Tail/Filtered) UPON HER ARRIVAL TO THE STATES, THE YOUNG MISS WING FOUND HER LIFE BEING SAVED BY THE ACTIONS OF A DARING POLICEWOMAN, MISTY KNIGHT.
BOAZ2: (No Tail/Filtered) THE TWO BECAME FAST FRIENDS.
PANEL 4
The TV screen still fills the panel. The image shown is a forced perspective shot of the young Misty Knight having just hurled an explosive device. However, she is a few seconds too late and the device has detonated a few feet in front of her. The escalating explosion blocks the view of her soon to be decimated arm.
BOAZ: (No Tail/Filtered) AFTER LOSING HER ARM IN THE LINE OF DUTY, PATROLWOMAN KNIGHT CHOSE EARLY RETIREMENT OVER A DESK ASSIGNMENT.
PANEL 5
Pull back slightly from the television to reveal the borders of the set and a hint of the surrounding room. The screen image displays a staged photograph of the ladies in front of their office building, pointing to their company’s name, NIGHTWING RESTORATIONS, LTD, on the building’s registry. (If legible, make sure that “NELSON & MURDOCK” are included among the other tenants of the building.)
BOAZ: (No Tail/Filtered) WITH A BIONIC ARM SUPPLIED BY INDUSTRIALIST TONY STARK, MISTY JOINED COLLEEN IN FORMING THE PRIVATE INVESTIGATION FIRM, “NIGHTWING RESTORATIONS, LTD.”
SFX: DING-DONG
PAGE SIX (Four Wide-screen Panels)
(Note: All four panels on this page have the same locked perspective of the Television from the midpoint of Colleen’s living room. Stay on the exposition provided by the documentary as the main action occurs off panel.)
PANEL 1
The indomitable pair of Luke Cage and Danny Rand, in costume as their alter egos – POWER MAN and IRON FIST – occupy the screen. The narrator, Boaz, is still not visible. Colleen makes her way across the living room to go answer the unseen door.
SFX: DING-DONG
BOAZ: (No Tail/Filtered) MOST REMEMBER THEM AS THE LONG-TIME ALLIES OF LUKE CAGE & DANNY RAND, BETTER KNOWN AS POWER MAN & IRON FIST – HOWEVER, THESE TWO WOMEN WERE MUCH MORE THAN JUST SIDEKICKS.
COLLEEN: HOLD ON. HOLD ON.
PANEL 2
Colleen has moved off panel (presumably in order to answer the door). On the television screen, a battle shot of Colleen and Misty in action taking on old school versions of the WHIRLWIND and PASTE-POT PETE. Still no narrator.
BOAZ1: (No Tail/Filtered) NEVER KNOWN FOR DEFEATING WORLD DEVOURERS OR ATLANTEAN BEHEMOTHS, THESE LADY CRUSADERS FOUGHT EVIL ON A SMALLER SCALE..
BOAZ2: (No Tail/Filtered) ..AND CARVED OUT A NICHE FOR THEMSELVES IN THE NEW YORK HERO SCENE.
COLLEEN: (No Tail) COME ON IN, I WAS JUST WATCHING THE SHOW.
PANEL 3
Still no sign of Colleen and her newly arrived guest while the television display is a redux of the scene from Page 5, Panel 5 except it shows only Misty as she replaces the old shingle with one that reads “MISTY KNIGHT INVESTIGATIONS.”
BOAZ: (No Tail/Filtered) FOLLOWING YEARS OF SUCCESSFUL COLLABORATION, THE DUO DISSOLVED THEIR PARTNERSHIP AFTER THE BIRTH OF COLLEEN’S DAUGHTER, ALLISON.
COLLEEN: (No Tail) I REALLY THINK IF MISTY HAD AGREED TO AN INTERVIEW, WE COULD..
PANEL 4
Colleen and her guest remain off panel as the image on the television depicts a present-day Colleen working security on the ‘red carpet’ of a Hollywood premiere. Dressed in a stylish pantsuit, she is directing two larger, male bodyguards to new positions.
SFX: (Large) CRASH!!
BOAZ: (No Tail/Filtered) COLLEEN MOVED OUT WEST AND FORMED THE SUCCESSFUL ‘REDWING GROUP’ – PROVIDING SPECIALIZED SECURITY TO HOLLYWOOD’S RICH & FAMOUS.
PAGE SEVEN (Five Panels)
PANEL 1
Still nighttime, a black Land Rover makes it way up the lighted Pacific Coast Highway towards Malibu. To the left of the SUV is the moonlit Pacific Ocean, to the right, a steep, rocky incline.
MACKENZIE: (No Tail) I STILL CAN’T BELIEVE IT.
BELLE: (No Tail) YEAH. YOU EVEN HAD THE BOUNCERS SHAKING IN THEIR BOOTS, ALLY.
PANEL 2
Inside the Land Rover – from the absolute rear of the vehicle looking forward. ALLISON WING is behind the wheel, BELLE is riding shotgun and MACKENZIE occupies the rear seat yet is leaning into the front section to participate in the conversation. All three are facing front, so in this panel all we see is the rear of the two front seats and MacKenzie, an athletic teenage girl with short, stylish brunette hair. Belle’s bushy blonde ponytail can be seen just peeking over the high headrests of the automobile.
ALLISON: IT WAS NO BIG DEAL, GUYS.
BELLE: BUT THAT ONE DUDE WAS IMMENSE. HE MUST HAVE BEEN, LIKE, FOUR OF YOU.
PANEL 3
On the hood of the car, looking through the windshield of the Land Rover at all three girls. From the left, Belle, an attractive & perky blonde cheerleader type with a bushy mane of curly hair pulled up into a ponytail, MacKenzie, a beautiful Eurasian girl that looks as if she just came off the fashion runways of Milan, and Allison, a sophisticated blonde society-type with an athletic build & face, are all dressed up from their night on the town.
MACKENZIE1: NOT A PROB FOR MY KUNG FU PRINCESS.
MACKENZIE2: MAYBE TOMORROW NIGHT YOU CAN ROUGH UP THE BOUNCER AT IVAR, SO WE CAN FINALLY GET IN THERE?
PANEL 4
From outside the driver side window, looking in at the profile of our young Miss Allison. Her beauty is obvious, yet not overwhelming.
ALLISON1: WHO SIMON?
ALLISON2: I COULDN’T HURT SIMON. HE’S AN OLD BUDDY OF COLLEEN’S.
PANEL 5
From behind, the Land Rover is signaling for a right turn. A sign rests a little further up the road indicating that MALIBU is the next right.
ALLISON: NOW, WHO AM I DROPPING OFF FIRST?
PAGE EIGHT (Six Panels)
PANEL 1
Reminiscent of Page 1, Panel 5. Allison’s Land Rover makes its way up the winding road to the Wing residence. All the interior lights of the house are off.
NO DIALOGUE
PANEL 2
From the roof of the Wing house looking at the SUV pull up to the front of the house.
NO DIALOGUE
PANEL 3
Return to the hood of car, looking through the windshield at Allison alone, behind the wheel. Her face registers her present state of shock – jaw dropped, eyes gone wide.
NO DIALOGUE
PANEL 4
From behind the Land Rover on the driver side as Allison is stepping out of the vehicle. Her body language displays her hesitation. The headlights of the vehicle show that the main entrance of the house, composed of the same thick glass as the rest of the exteriors, has been demolished. For lack of a better description, it looks like “The Hulk” took a leisurely stroll through the door and left a hole resembling his gigantic form. The rest of house looms in darkness.
ALLISON: HELLO?
PANEL 5
Same as Page 8, Panel 5 with Allison now standing in front of the new hole in her house.
ALLISON: COLLEEN?
PANEL 6
Same as prior two panels with Allison nowhere to be seen. Presumably she is in the interior of the house.
ALLISON: (Screaming/No Tail) MOM!!
PAGE NINE (Splash Page)
PANEL 1
In the now darkened living room, the only source of illumination is the headlights of the SUV outside. Allison is doubled over in shock and horror, reaching out to the body of her mother. Colleen, bloody and battered with clothes ripped and torn, is hanging from the wide-screen television in effigy of Christ’s crucifixion.
NO DIALOGUE
