  Now, I’ll Never Get to Go to a Wal-Mart

Andrew Young Resigns From Wal-Mart Post

Civil rights leader Andrew Young, who was hired to help Wal-Mart Stores Inc. improve its public image, said early Friday he was stepping down from his position as head of an outside support group amid criticism for remarks seen as racially offensive.

Considering that Young was a well know civil rights leader and an associate of Martin Luther King, I was curious to see what racially offensive remarks he had said. (We, white folk, like to keep a tally of what remarks are considered offensive for future reference.)

Well, when asked about Wal-Mart’s impact on closing smaller mom-and-pop stores, Mr. Young told the Los Angeles Sentinel that:

"Well, I think [Wal-Mart] should; they ran the ‘mom and pop’ stores out of my neighborhood. You see, those are the people who have been overcharging us, selling us stale bread and bad meat and wilted vegetables. And they sold out and moved to Florida. I think they've ripped off our communities enough. First it was Jews, then it was Koreans and now it's Arabs; very few black people own these stores."

I can see how that statement can be inflammatory, but was he wrong? Did not do his job and defend Wal-Mart’s position?

I mean, it’s not like he was Jimmy the Greek spouting off about extra African muscles. He wasn’t blaming his drunk driving on these store owners. He was being honest. He was holding up a mirror to what is actually occurring. It just wasn’t popular or politically correct.

And for that, he resigned.

Was he forced to resign? Maybe. Maybe not. However, the majority of people will believe he was pushed out the door.

I’ve never set foot in a Wal-Mart. The best way, however, to get my sorry ass in such a Mecca to consumerism would be Young’s route. Be honest with me, be up front with me and bad mouth the Arabs.

Politically correct methodology, while more pleasing to the public persona of the populace, just won’t win me over. (How’s that for alliteration?)

It’s like telling me that it is wrong to assume someone that looks this creepy would be up to no good.
And to quote Broncatello – “what sort of f'ed up thing do you have to do to get arrested and held on sex charges in BANGKOK THAILAND?”

Personally, I don’t know -- but I bet it has something to do with “bad meat and wilted vegetables”.

American comedian Andy Dick reportedly went berserk backstage at the Comedy Central Roast Of William Shatner on Sunday, licking screen siren Farrah Fawcett and biting a journalist. New York Post reporter Mandy Stadtmiller claims she watched Dick lick Fawcett, Carrie Fisher and comedian Patton Oswalt before turning his attentions to her. He allegedly groped her, tried to kiss her, proclaimed his love for her and then bit her hand, telling her, "Baby please, put in something nice. They're so mean. I'm not weird. Maybe I'm a little weird, they make me out to be a monster, I'm not a monster. I just want to have fun, baby please." She also accuses him of urinating in front of her and offering her cocaine. The show will air on Sunday August 20.

So, in summation, Dick bit Mandy. It could have been worse. The roles could have been reversed. Ba-dum-dum.

Also, look who Andy licked. It's like one of those logic problems gone plain awry.

Personally, I would have guessed Stefanie Powers or Nichelle Nichols. Never in a million years would I have picked Patton Oswalt to complete that trio.

(Interesting bit of trivia: Patton Oswalt is sometimes credited as Shecky Chucklestein.)

In addition, I loved how the bulk of the piece focused on the licking and the biting. It is as if the urination and cocaine are somehow understood when dealing with Andy Dick. Expected even.

And yes, that secretly makes me jealous.

  Mike Wallace Almost Forgot Where His World Headquarters ARE (or How Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Is Down with the Toby Keith)

CBS Attacked For Airing Interview with Iranian President

The CBS Public Eye blog said Thursday that the network has been deluged with complaints about Mike Wallace's scheduled interview with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad due to air Sunday on 60 Minutes. A typical complaint, it indicated, was this one: "What is it with CBS? First Saddam Hussein, now this creep! Don't you guys have any allegiance to America anymore? Goodness, it is where you got your start and where your world headquarters are. I'm switching to Fox." Another wrote: "Mike Wallace you should be ashamed of yourself! You should remember that Iran is part of the Axis of Evil. How dare you interview Iranian President. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is the ENEMY."

Notice how the "true" patriots in this country always clock in at a fourth grade reading level? Or maybe CBS has several world headquarters?

Personally, I love the complaints about the interview before they even hear what the man had to say. (Reminds me how the Catholic League protested Dogma before they even saw it.) For all they know Mahmoud could have spent the whole conversation proclaiming his love for Toby Keith and Monster Truck Pulls.

Speaking of which, since 60 Minutes airs on Sunday, Sunday, Sunday, wouldn’t there be a conflict between the program and said Monster Truck Pulls?

And, the CBS response:

Commenting on the messages, Vaughn Vergers, who runs the CBS blog, observed: "The media's job is to present information, the journalist's job is to ask the questions, the audience's job is to judge the answers."

Amen, brother.

Now, I think my liberal ass is going to go watch Good Night, and Good Luck. again and reminisce about a better time in our country’s history - when Americans could actually travel abroad without being forced to falsely claim Canadian citizenship.
